Welcome to my House in the Street
Hi, my name is Liz and I own a small terraced Victorian house in our street. It is testimony to the Victorians that our home is so beautiful, packed with original features and little spaces to make our house so interesting. My first builder (there have been a couple!) said that he wondered if he would look as good when he was 100 years old! I doubt it
We bought this house as a project and investment like many similar people in the UK. We wanted a place to call home as well as a project to keep up busy for a while, as we renovated and improved, scraped and painted, sanded and dug up all sorts. It has been a battle with blood, sweat and tears and a fair old bit of money, but as the project draws to an end, and our house is now our home, I’m almost itching to do it all again and become a DIY boffin come property developer!
Property Investment and Improvement Takes Time or Money or Both
We have spent many many months over a couple of years renovating our house. We have tried to do this sympathetically with the property and its’ era. It’s a Victorian house, a tiny masterpiece we think. The Victorians were masters of building, creating magnificent developments out of the need for a fast growing population, combined with excellent moves forward in industrialisation. I love the Victorian era and am an avid read of The Victorian Society We made a few early decisions when buying the house, I was definitely set on getting wooden window shutters like from this company as we wanted to install our own shutters which complimented the house. It is not a large French style town house so exterior shutters were out. We looked at a bunch of plantation shutters and took ages choosing but in the end it was DIY shutters for us which you can read more about in our interior touches section. We actually looked at installing B&Q shutters for a bit too but changed our mind last minute. Nothing against B&Q of course they make some amazing stuff at really good prices and must be as popular as any of the big home improvement stores, it was just the way it went with our home renovation and you end up making an awful lot of decisions pretty much on the fly if you haven’t had the chance to do your planning in time!
Along with shutters, the next definite choices we made when buying the home was to get a couple of walls knocked through and that is where we found a decent local builder. There are a bunch of sites which are well worth looking at including top trades people and builder finder to name a couple. Again, more of these type of recommendations in our top tips section. (intl) Property renovation can lead to a rise in investment, depending on what you do and where you do it. Of course it helps if you are not buying your property right at the peak of the housing market and selling just after a crash or recession, but lets assume things stay roughly as they have been for a couple of decades longer!
We hope you love visiting our site as much as we loved doing up our house. It’s amazing what you can achieve with a little TLC and a decent chunk of time and some cash. read on and enjoy.
